Give Students a Leveled Learning Field

How Edtech Can Nurture Equity in Education

Student equity is of the utmost priority in education today. This includes addressing a range of differences that affect students' ability to learn, from learning environments and socioeconomic factors to individual learning needs and preferences. The right technology can help reduce disparities between one learner and the next by supporting students in different places with different needs. With well-crafted solutions in their toolbox, school IT leaders can set all students up for success.

Ensuring All Students Can See and Hear

All students should have a learning space that allows them to see and hear lessons, but that isn't the reality. Students studying at home often have to overcome audible distractions like a doorbell ringing, someone talking on the phone in the next room, or construction going on outside. Classrooms might be even worse in terms of noise pollution.

The World Health Organization recommends a maximum of 35db noise levels in classrooms, yet virtually all learning environments exceed this limit by nearly double. In addition, research shows that children require sound to be 300% louder than background noise, otherwise learning loss can occur. The Logitech Zone Learn Wired Headset is optimized for vocal clarity, rather than music, and can help students keep their focus on important concepts, whether in bustling classrooms or noisy homes.

Vision challenges can be daunting as well. Students sitting in the back of the classroom may have trouble seeing material at the front, which can affect their engagement, while remote learners may face the same problem if they can’t see material clearly on their devices.

With 25% of K-6 students having vision problems and 80% of K-12 learning occurring visually, ensuring good visibility in the classroom or on devices is crucial. The Logitech Scribe Whiteboard Camera transforms any seat into a front-row seat and ensures that students can see all content, regardless of their physical position. The AI-powered whiteboard camera automatically enhances the color and contrast of dry-erase markers to make text and sketches easier to read, while image segmentation technology recognizes and captures other forms of content like sticky notes.

Tailoring Technology to Fit Every Learner

Students come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds — and they learn differently as a result. An equitable approach to edtech provides options that accommodate all bodies, rather than requiring them to adjust to the technology.

User-centered tools make a big difference in how students engage with and experience lessons. The Logitech Pen USI Enabled Stylus for Chromebook is designed to support various hand sizes and levels of motor development. The Logitech Crayon for iPad has a smart tip that dynamically adjusts line width, and palm-rejection technology to keep students’ hands in a natural position while they write, annotate, sketch and more.

Logitech Zone Learn’s adjustable band works with a variety of hairstyles and head sizes for a snug, comfy fit at different ages and in different cultures. And because it’s optimized for vocal clarity, it benefits all students, including ELLs and other language learners.

Addressing Cost and Flexibility Challenges Faced by Schools

Schools often face financial challenges in providing students with the technology they need. IT leaders should look for flexible, well-built edtech that can work across subjects and lesson plans — and keep working year after year — to inspire maximum learning at minimum cost.

Flexible solutions can support multiple subjects and activities in a single school day, which maximizes the investment. For example, the Logitech C270 HD Webcam and Logitech H111 Stereo Headset have built-in microphones for better voice capture and background noise reduction, which instantly multiplies how many uses they can serve. Similarly, the Logitech MK120 Corded Keyboard and Mouse Combo delivers a familiar, easy-to-use design that works right out of the box, opening up learning opportunities for students from kindergarten to high school.

Durability and repairability means schools can stretch their budgets. This helps them stay out of the buy-break-replace cycle that produces waste and causes gaps in learning. Logitech's education solutions are extensively drop-tested and wipe-tested, so they hold up to active learning.

Design features such as Logitech Zone Learn Wired Headset’s swappable cords and replaceable earpads allow educators to avoid purchasing all-new units if a single component breaks, enhancing sustainability and extending the lifespan of schools’ technology investments. Similarly, replacement Logitech Crayon tip covers are available in case the original tip cover is ever damaged or misplaced.

In addition to providing technology that is tailored to fit learners, offering students a choice of tools to use for lessons is a good way to give them ownership in their education and empower different learning styles. Consider building an edtech “pencil case” — which might contain, for example, a mouse, a headset, a stylus, and a webcam — and then giving students the freedom to choose the tool or tools that they want to support their learning without having to be 1:1 for every student. Having this freedom can inspire their creativity and boost engagement.

When we design edtech with flexibility and inclusivity in mind from the start, the differences between students start to shrink. Well-designed solutions have the power to give all students a share of the future and bring them closer together, whether they’re separated by physical space, economic constraints, or just the basic differences that make us human.
